05/25/2021

If you are an avid outdoorsman, then you might want to explore the different types of activities in your area. If you're not a big fan of the outdoors but have children who enjoy being active outside, this information could be helpful for finding new things they can do with their friends.

No matter what your reason for wanting to learn more about these popular outdoor activities and how they work is, this post will provide some insights on where to start!

Outdoor Activities: Hiking vs Backpacking

Hiking and backpacking both involve going out into nature while carrying all necessary supplies on one's back. They differ in terms of distance traveled and the amount of gear.

Hiking is a shorter distance, usually between one and five miles. It's an easier activity than backpacking because it doesn't require as much time or energy to complete. Hikers may bring along water, snacks, raincoats, maps, first aid kits, and other necessities for the day on their backs; however, these items are not required like they are when hiking more strenuous trails such as Mount Everest.

Backpackers will carry all necessary supplies in a backpack that can hold things from tents to cooking equipment if needed and standard items such as food, clothes, sleeping bag, etc., while also carrying trekking poles for balance assistance up steep inclines or down rocky paths with unstable footing. They might be able to carry a tent or hammock, but the larger the load carried in these cases, the more difficult it will be to move and stay comfortable.

Some other outdoor activities are:

  • Rock Climbing traversing rock faces at varying heights using techniques such as zigzagging along cracks in rocks (lead climbing), ascending ropes secured by bolts drilled into the cliff face that has been replaced by a partner (top roping), rappelling, or descending from heights using ropes secured to anchors in the ground and/or cliff face with carabiners and descenders
  • Mountain Biking traveling the cross country over mountainous terrain as well as around lakes and streams.
  • Mountain Hiking walking up steep mountain slopes
  • Kayaking moving across the water using a craft that is propelled by paddles while sitting or kneeling in it.

It can be seen that there are many outdoor activities available for all ages and skill levels. These range from the less strenuous to more difficult sports that require a lot of physical exertion and stamina.

Whether you're looking for a sport or activity to spend time with your family or friends or just need some exercise, these options should provide ample opportunity for everyone's needs!
